The word Soul or the existence of an aspect of the divine within us is a central theme of Jung.  His psychology is that all activities are purposeful to its development and he leaves open the question of the effect of terror and destruction on the spiritual development of an individual.  The reason may be that we have not dealt with the evil and terror in our own being.  Jung states: The Age of Enlightenment, which stripped nature and human institutions of gods, overlooked the God of Terror who dwells in the human soul.  In these troubled times, what are we called upon to do in relation to hardship and terror?

Les Stein is a Jungian Analyst in private practice in Sydney.  His book “Depth Psychology of the Mystical Experience” will be published shortly by Routledge in London.
