Cultural Anxiety and the End of the Individual

with Craig San Roque and David Russell

Cultural Anxiety and the End of the Individual is a talk built around Craig’s thoughts arising while writing the book:

‘Thomas Singer; Cultural Complexes, Archetypal Vision and the Art of Collapse’.

In September 2025 Craig was commissioned by the editors of a new Routledge series on major contemporary contributors to Jungian psychology.

The fourth major contemporary contributor in the series is Thomas Singer, who will be known to those of you familiar with ‘Placing Psyche; Cultural Complexes in Australia’. edited by Amanda Dowd, David Tacey and Craig San Roque.  That book includes chapters by local people who you may know.

This new book on Singer’s work is now submitted to Routledge.

Craig says: “Writing the Singer book has made me rethink and also  appreciate many things from the Jungian stream;  some of which I want to share with you, especially given the times and the current American Mid-Term elections.

'“I have, in writing this book included references to developments in Australia  -  because I discovered that some of us have been ahead of the game in working with cultural and eco social issues -  as shown in themes in the Placing Psyche book. I want to honour those people in this talk, which is why I have invited David Russell to participate.

Craig San Roque has practiced Jungian Analytic Psychology for over 40 years (London, Sydney, Canberra and central Australia). A former president and co-director of training for ANZSJA.  He has taught Anthropology/ Performance studies, Social Ecology and Jungian Cultural Psychology at University of Western Sydney.  He is credited with many publications - including in – the recent and timely Cultural Complexes and the Soul of America and in Placing Psyche  with Amanda Dowd and David Tacey. Also, the Sydney Jung Society book on climate change, The Green Book and graphic novels; A Long Weekend in Alice Springs and Sydney/ Purgatorio with Joshua Santospirito.
