The Aboriginal Gift: Spirituality for a Nation with David Tacey

This talk offers a Jungian approach to the present Australian situation. Aboriginal people constitute 3 percent of the total population, but exert an impact on Australian society which is disproportionate to their number. This is because they are the ‘first nations’ people, the only Australians fully at home in this country. The rest of us are New Australians who have come from elsewhere, either in recent decades, or during the nineteenth century, as with my family. Non-indigenous Australians are becoming more receptive to the indigenous. They embody and express the soul of the country, and to that extent they exert an effect which might be called a ‘haunting’. They spook the secular nation, with the message that the spiritual has not been done away with and is vital to the enduring health and vitality of the nation. They say they have a gift to give all Australians: the gift of belonging to country. This is the message of the Uluru Statement from the Heart. Whether or not the Referendum is won, these dynamics remain core issues today.
