This workshop will immerse us into the dark side of our unconscious – what Jung called “the shadow” and will trace how it causes suffering.  We all suffer and we all desperately want to avoid it. We will examine how the shadow arises and how we can possibly deal with its force.  In the course of this workshop, we will look at how projection occurs, how the individuation process works, how analysis helps, and most importantly, what practical ways can we deal with the suffering.

The practical questions we will ask are:

  • What are the source of suffering?
  • Is there an end to suffering?
  • What techniques can I use to stop suffering?
  • Does meditation help?
  • Does analysis help?
  • What would it be like if I didn’t suffer?

We will use all resources we have to answer these questions – Jung’s writings, fairy tales, spiritual traditions, meditation, psychoanalysis, support.  The aim of the workshop is that you will emerge with a greater understanding of suffering and some techniques to minimise it.

Les Stein is a Jungian Analyst in private practice in Sydney.  He is a graduate of the C.G. Jung Institute of New York and a member of the New York Association for Analytical Psychology, the Australian New Zealand Society of Jungian Analysts and the International Association for Analytical Psychology.  His latest forthcoming book is “Deep Psychology of the Mystical Experience” for Karnac Books, London.
